Beer Appreciation 101

Ever wanted to know more about beer but were too intimidated to ask? Don’t know the difference between a Saison and a Stout, but not sure to whom you should turn? Are you a connoisseur of craft beer, but are always looking to learn more about what goes into giving beer its multitude of different aromas, flavors, and colors? Then look no further, we’ve got the event for you!

Come learn from Kevin, our Head Brewer and nationally-ranked beer judge, and sample EIGHT beers, as he gives an overview of the ingredients that provide beers their unique characteristics, discusses what defines various brewing cultures and centers around the world, and highlights numerous beer styles and what makes them similar and different from one another. Throughout the discussion, you’ll gain an appreciation for why you may like certain beers, while understanding why you may not enjoy others quite so much. You’ll also enjoy a tour of our brewery and an overview of the complete Ferment.Drink.Repeat brewing process.

The knowledge you’ll gain in our Beer Appreciation 101 Class will help you make better-informed beer style selections in the future when out and about with friends, or when deciding what six-pack to grab at the market. Great activity for groups - book now!

Scott is a songwriter, performer, and music therapist.  He recently released his first full-length LP called Little Tiny Things,  a special project because it reunites a very dear group of friends. Shawn Camp and Tom Hudson (both of Silver Scooter) met up with me at the beautiful Idler Recording operated by Tyler Mallory (also ex-Silver Scooter) who recorded and mixed most of the songs. Dave McNair (Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Los Lobos, Willie Nelson, and of course Silver Scooter) mixed a few songs and mastered all the material.

The songs feature guitars, bass, and drums with a heavy splash of vintage keyboards.  Some rock and bounce along while others quietly strum.  The songs range in subject matter from the personal to what it might be like to live with Alzheimer’s Disease, as some of my music therapy clients do.  A deceptively simple keyboard drumbeat opens the album on the title track, but the songs’ lyrics disintegrate into the profound fears haunting memory loss: “What if you no longer can sing? What if your heart only knows darkness?”

Scott is a former member of Silver Scooter, which released three critically acclaimed albums, and dozens of singles and E.P.’s.  Touring extensively and sharing stages with Death Cab For Cutie, Kristen Hersh, Unwound, and Olivia Tremor Control to name just a few, they frequented the SXSW Music Festival as well as CMJ.

Aaron Seeman's onslaught of solo accordion and vocals has astounded audiences of all shapes and sizes. Maximum Rock 'n Roll, the premier punk magazine, pronounced him "over the top!" for his note-for-note renditions of the entire first Dead Kennedys album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. His repertoire also includes, but is not limited to, 70's rock, Broadway, klezmer, classical, country, Sousa marches, punk rock, and even a polka or two.

Rather than play hokey accordion versions of these songs, Duckman/Seeman seeks to demonstrate that accordion and vocals alone can evoke the spirit of the song, whether the hard driving rock of AC/DC, the wide vocal range and sonic landscape of Boston, or the supersonic speeds and driving force of Dead Kennedys.

In addition to his accordionizationizing, Aaron Seeman is a founding member, arranger, and vocalist with San Francisco's Punk Rock Orchestra, which performs full scale orchestral versions of classic punk songs. He also plays accordion in ShamalamacordPolkacide, and Red Hot Chachkas. Aaron Seeman was a founding member of the eclectic Romanian Music-inspired folk group Fishtank Ensemble. He has recorded with Mr. Bungle and Estradasphere. He is the composer of a modern classical opera "Opium: Diary of a Cure."

Portola Garden Tour and After Party

SAN FRANCISCO’S GARDEN DISTRICT OPENS ITS DOORS FOR 11th ANNUAL PORTOLA GARDEN TOUR!

Once home to flower-growing enterprises and farms, The Portola is known as San Francisco’s Garden District. The garden tour is a self-guided walk through private and public gardens in the sunny Portola neighborhood in San Francisco’s southeastern quadrant. It’s also a fundraiser for City College horticulture students.

Participants will learn about what plants thrive in San Francisco, how to make even small spaces outstanding, ideas for decks and patios and fun landscaping tips -- and get inspired to work on their own back yard. It’s a wonderful community building experience as neighbors open their yards to scores of tour participants.

This year we are proud to host a community “after-party” where we'll be serving up "Hyper-local Fresh Hop Ale" - a beer brewed with hops grown right here by gardeners in The Portola! Come celebrate the history of this wonderful neighborhood and taste a truly 'hyper-local' brew at the close of the tour!

What: Portola Garden Tour featuring 15+ private and public gardens

When: Saturday, September 30, Garden Tours open at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., after party at FDR starts when the Tap Room opens at 3 p.m.

Where: The Portola neighborhood – garden locations will be listed here

2nd Annual FDR Oktoberfest

  • Ferment Drink Repeat - FDR Brewery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Come celebrate with us as we kickoff our 2nd annual week-long, FDR Oktoberfest! And yes, the true Oktoberfest in Munich always starts in September but no one is going to quibble over such details when there is tasty beer involved.

Tradition would dictate we serve an old school German Oktoberfest, or the newer variety of German Festbier they pour by the litre in Munich ... but who says we have to stick to tradition?!

For our Fest, we'll be serving up "Helles Is Afraid We'll Take Over", a beautiful, light, malty Munich Helles, as well as "mOktoberfest Ale", an amber-colored, malt-forward beer inspired by the traditional Oktoberfest lager served at the fest in Munich up until 1990.

The Schedule of Events is as follows:

Saturday, September 23rd: Opening Night: Live Music by Duckmandu, Fresh Bavarian Pretzels, A Sausage Stand, and our crowd favorite - The Beer Stein Holding Contest (9:00 pm)

Tuesday, September 26th: It's still TACO TUESDAY but with a TWIST! Bavarian Fusion Tacos! Yep!

Thursday, September 28th: Live Music Thursday will feature "The Treacherous French." While not a German Style Band, they recently released a new album and we dig their vibe ... besides a member of their band plays a WASHBOARD! So ... yeah.

Saturday, September 30th:  Live Accordion Music by the illustrious Duckmandu, Pretzel necklaces, A Sausage Stand, and our crowd favorite - The Beer Stein Holding Contest (9:00 pm)

Sunday, October 1st: Live Music by "Mad Hungry".  Mad Hungry features three-part harmonies and a folk-style instrumentation, usually acoustic guitar, upright bass, and melodica. And of course we'll have more sausages, pretzels, and stein-holding revelry!

All week we'll have festive Oompah music playing and our fun photo-op backdrop with props for your social media pleasure ... So, break out your Dirndls and Lederhose and come join the fun!

Brews on the Bay!

Enjoy over 70 locally crafted beers from San Francisco breweries while soaking up the salty air, sunshine, food and spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and San Francisco. It’s one of the most memorable and unique beer festivals in the world.

You can expect our member breweries to serve unlimited pours of their latest and greatest IPA, farmhouse ale, session beer, barrel-aged sour, imperial stout, and many other beer styles. The brewers will not only be bringing a ton of beer, but they will be on hand to serve and answer questions.

Members of the San Francisco Brewers Guild will be bringing their best brews (official list TBA) and local food vendors will be bringing a variety of option for purchase.

This is our 14th year aboard the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien, an historic landmark from the World War II Merchant Marine era. A portion of festival proceeds will benefit the National Liberty Ship Memorial. This 2017 installment of Brews on the Bay will be our biggest and best yet, so we hope you can join us! Come celebrate the lighting of the Avenue Theater neon with FDR.  Following the ceremony drop by for some community potluck (please bring a dish to share) and some live music by the very talented Dante Ricci.

Dante was the lead guitarist for the NJ-based band Noah's Arcade and has performed with regional groups The Rearrangement, Some Assembly Required, the Jon Lall Band, Geneva & the Conventions, and the one-night-only blues spectacular known as Fake ID. He was a musician in residence at Winberie’s in the heart of Princeton, NJ, and has been performing solo or with bands at bars, coffeeshops, restaurants, breweries, and weddings for the past 15 years.  He loves nothing more than to entertain song requests, and he may even let you sing one if you know the words and you're bigger than him (which you probably are).
