LIVE MUSIC - The Western Nephews with Special Guests Decal and Greg Hoy & the Boys

The Western Nephews are five residents of San Francisco who stumbled into existence in 2017 in various subterranean, poorly ventilated rehearsal rooms around the city. They brought with them a love of Exile-era Stones coupled with the DIY ethos and sound of early American punk rock. They played their first show at San Francisco’s Hotel Utah in November of 2017, then promptly lost a guitar player to the threat of divorce.

The following month, Kevin Phillips (Guitar) joined Brian Escobar (Guitar) as the architects of the band’s guitar-driven sound, filled out by Evan Meagher (Vocals, Harmonica), Alan Hord (Bass) and John McCain (Drums) and they never looked back. Their smoldering and swampy sound ferments equal parts studied chops and sudden childlike chaos infused with wry, cynical lyrics that reflect the mercurial urban landscape that birthed them. They come at you hard and fast and loud, out of tortured speakers that have something to say and don’t particularly care what you think.

The band self-recorded basic tracks for their debut digital EP - American Standard - on Cinco de Mayo 2018 at their aboveground SF rehearsal studio. Throughout May, additional recording and mixing was done at Escobar’s Sunset Tamales studio.

American Standard was released to the internet on Father’s Day, June 17 at roughy 10 PM PST.

IPA Through the Years

  • Ferment.Drink.Repeat - FDR Brewery (map)

You can’t go to a craft brewery today without being inundated with a veritable plethora of IPA on the tap board. From variable strength - Session, Regular, Double, Triple – to a wide range of “styles” within the style – West Coast, New England/Hazy/Juicy, Brut, Belgian, White, Red, Black, and on and on – but how did we get to this point? Why has “IPA” become the de facto style that many people most-associate with craft beer?

Join us as we dive into these questions and more on our journey of “IPA Through the Years” where we’ll explore the evolution of the style from the beginnings of the craft beer movement of the late 1970s/early 1980s through Today.

Your ticket includes a 90-minute tasting led by our Head Brewer, Kevin Inglin, and Nationally-ranked Beer Judge Evan Rusackas, as they walk you through the history and changes of the style over the years. We’ll start our discussion with the branching out of American IPA from its English IPA roots and you’ll get to taste and compare examples through the decades - we’ve created period-specific beers to represent the way IPA was brewed in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and Today - and we'll end with a look into the future of what may be on the horizon for this ever-evolving style.

You’ll be able to understand firsthand and enjoy how the style has changed – from the caramel malt and citrus-hop focused beers of the 80s through the fruit-forward and lower bitter offerings of today. You’ll receive seven taster samples and end the session with your choice of one full pour of the IPA of your choosing.

Beet the System is an uplifting and organic-fresh yet well-seasoned ensemble that has grown out of the compost fermented by one of San Francisco’s beloved aughts bands, Chemystry Set. Its genesis was inspired by Vermont artist Ben Levitt, aka breakfast, whose Beet the System art inspired  long-time tubersmiths Baba Ndjhoni (mandolin) and Sven Eberlein’s (guitar) second musical seeding.

Along with new shoots Dan Bonnin (drums), Tim Kelly (bass) and Obadiah Butterworth (guitar), the original plantings were nurtured to maturity into a rockin’ tapestry of cross pollinating original ear worms with a healthy dousing of world beat, groove, grass and punk-ish fertilizer.

Wandering yonder, down the untilled path, Beet the System is digging beneath the surface to unearth the real dirt on boundary-defying, hip shaking and message-driven musical roots. Lettuce turnip the beet at a thriving pasture near you!

LIVE MUSIC - AKES

Consisting of an author, a videographer, and an audio engineer, the three members of Bay Area ensemble AKES take their music into their own hands; Joe DeMars (bass), Jack Hogan (guitar), Nick Cafiero (electric ukulele/vocals) —handle nearly every aspect of their creative lives in house. They are dedicated students of their craft from the gear they play to the music that influences them.

That mindset is a fitting accompaniment to their heady sound. Taking inspiration from the post-punk scenes in the U.K. and U.S. where dozens of bands allowed themselves the freedom to mash up instrumentation and musical textures, AKES winds in the sounds of synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines into already finely honed material cut from pop/rock cloth. These sounds are the beginnings of a new creative regime for a band that has already been wowing audiences in and around their Bay Area scene.

New single Friend A is a perfect stepping stone connecting the group’s past and future. With a title that references those literally nameless figures that fill out the cast list of major motion pictures, this scintillating slow burn calls out the hangers on of the social media age, who attempt to draft off the energy of someone else’s tragic loss and claim it as their own. It’s a potent message given extra power through AKES’ blend of Afrobeat, burbling electronica, and heartfelt pop.

The Jazz Beaus have been playing together for about two years, but the members have all been playing the music we love for much longer than that. All together, we have about 150 years of experience in this band. It’s been said that jazz is meant to be a joyful experience. Exactly how we feel. Yes, we’re serious about the music, and about respect for its traditions, our distinguished forebears and all that. But damn it, this stuff is supposed to be fun, and with the Jazz Beaus, that’s our goal. Fun for us, and fun for the audience.

LIVE MUSIC - Duckmandu & Friends

  • Ferment.Drink.Repeat - FDR Brewery (map)

Join us for a festive evening of Hanukkah, Klezmer, and Christmas music performed by accordion virtuoso Aaron Seeman and friends.

Aaron Seeman's onslaught of solo accordion and vocals has astounded audiences of all shapes and sizes. Maximum Rock 'n Roll, the premier punk magazine, pronounced him "over the top!" for his note-for-note renditions of the entire first Dead Kennedys album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. His repertoire also includes, but is not limited to, 70's rock, Broadway, klezmer, classical, country, Sousa marches, punk rock, and even a polka or two.

Rather than play hokey accordion versions of these songs, Duckman/Seeman seeks to demonstrate that accordion and vocals alone can evoke the spirit of the song, whether the hard driving rock of AC/DC, the wide vocal range and sonic landscape of Boston, or the supersonic speeds and driving force of Dead Kennedys, or favorite holiday classics.
