Beet the System is an uplifting and organic-fresh yet well-seasoned ensemble that has grown out of the compost fermented by one of San Francisco’s beloved aughts bands, Chemystry Set. Its genesis was inspired by Vermont artist Ben Levitt, aka breakfast, whose Beet the System art inspired  long-time tubersmiths Baba Ndjhoni (mandolin) and Sven Eberlein’s (guitar) second musical seeding.

Along with new shoots Dan Bonnin (drums), Tim Kelly (bass) and Obadiah Butterworth (guitar), the original plantings were nurtured to maturity into a rockin’ tapestry of cross pollinating original ear worms with a healthy dousing of world beat, groove, grass and punk-ish fertilizer.

Wandering yonder, down the untilled path, Beet the System is digging beneath the surface to unearth the real dirt on boundary-defying, hip shaking and message-driven musical roots. Lettuce turnip the beet at a thriving pasture near you!

The Jazz Beaus have been playing together for about two years, but the members have all been playing the music we love for much longer than that. All together, we have about 150 years of experience in this band. It’s been said that jazz is meant to be a joyful experience. Exactly how we feel. Yes, we’re serious about the music, and about respect for its traditions, our distinguished forebears and all that. But damn it, this stuff is supposed to be fun, and with the Jazz Beaus, that’s our goal. Fun for us, and fun for the audience.

Join us this Tuesday at FDR for a live music trivia event!  In this new twist on pub trivia, your host (local musician Dante Ricci) will guide you through three rounds of music-based questions that will put your knowledge of bands/artists, TV theme songs, movie soundtracks, and pop culture to the test.  Dante will provide the music - your job is to answer questions, win prizes, and drink fantastic beer!  Stick around after the quiz when Dante will keep the fun going by playing your requests.

Dante was the lead guitarist for the NJ-based band Noah's Arcade and has performed with regional groups The Rearrangement, Some Assembly Required, the Jon Lall Band, Geneva & the Conventions, and the one-night-only blues spectacular known as Fake ID. He was a musician in residence at Winberie’s in the heart of Princeton, NJ, and has been performing solo or with bands at bars, coffeeshops, restaurants, breweries, and weddings for the past 15 years.  He loves nothing more than to entertain song requests, and he may even let you sing one if you know the words and you're bigger than him (which you probably are).

Modern Standard Time fuses tradition and innovation to bring about a quartet experience that is fresh, exciting, energetic, therapeutic, and most importantly, real. Born from in-the-moment jam session faithfuls, MST contests long-held jazz canon and presents an array of deserving new "standards" for your consideration. Sunday's Cool Jam's hosts John Harris and Chris Cortez are joined by bassist of note Kazu Sato and tenor specialist Shaffer Salisbury to escort this exploration to the upper stratosphere (and perhaps even back).

Cupcake and Beer Pairing feat. Iron Brewer Winner

  • Ferment.Drink.Repeat - FDR Brewery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Our annual "Iron Brewer Competition" challenges homebrewers to brew beers using specifically assigned ingredients or to hit a target of inspiration - think of the "Iron Chef" TV show and you're on track. After two rounds of blind and public judging, we then brew a commercial scale batch with the winning homebrewers to feature during SF Beer Week. This year, we laid down the challenge to 40 homebrewers to create beer versions of mini cupcakes provided by Mission Minis.

For this event, you'll get to taste the inspiration Swiss Almond Coconut cupcake, alongside "Cupcake Reincarnate" - the scaled up version of the winning beer brewed by Terence Tse and Peter Bergstrom. From cupcake inspiration to the glass, you'll get to taste firsthand how the toasty almond and coconut notes of the cupcake shine through in the malty smooth beer. The winning brewers will also be on hand to geek out and talk about their process and decisions for making a beer version of the cupcake so deliciously drinkable.

IPA Through the Years

  • Ferment.Drink.Repeat - FDR Brewery (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

You can’t go to a craft brewery today without being inundated with a veritable plethora of IPA on the tap board. From variable strength - Session, Regular, Double, Triple – to a wide range of “styles” within the style – West Coast, New England/Hazy/Juicy, Brut, Belgian, White, Red, Black, and on and on – but how did we get to this point? Why has “IPA” become the de facto style that many people most-associate with craft beer?

Join us as we dive into these questions and more on our journey of “IPA Through the Years” where we’ll explore the evolution of the style from the beginnings of the craft beer movement of the late 1970s/early 1980s through Today.

Your ticket includes a 90-minute tasting led by our Head Brewer, Kevin Inglin, and Nationally-ranked Beer Judge Evan Rusackas, as they walk you through the history and changes of the style over the years. We’ll start our discussion with the branching out of American IPA from its English IPA roots and you’ll get to taste and compare examples through the decades - we’ve created period-specific beers to represent the way IPA was brewed in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and Today - and we'll end with a look into the future of what may be on the horizon for this ever-evolving style.

You’ll be able to understand firsthand and enjoy how the style has changed – from the caramel malt and citrus-hop focused beers of the 80s through the fruit-forward and lower bitter offerings of today. You’ll receive seven taster samples and end the session with your choice of one full pour of the IPA of your choosing.
