The Olde Tyme Bluegrass Review play traditional olde tyme, bluegrass and other styles of fiddle and flat picking tunes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries which include compositions by greats including Bill Monroe and Kenny Baker. Flatpicker Kevin Hogan plays on a Martin D28 guitar, whose model was designed for flat picking and bluegrass style strumming. Hogan was introduced to flat picking listening to “The Pizza Tapes” a Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and Tony Rice recording. Kevin has played in bands from Philly all the way to Frisco and currently is guitarist in the local band “Cool Pistol String Band”. Hogan found Fiddler of 40 years Ben Barnes on a craigslist ad “Desperately Seeking Flatpicker who also picks a good Chop.” Barnes’ Olde Tyme Trio could no longer play regularly due to distance issues. After auditioning several guitarists for the Review, his two years of waiting came to an end when Hogan showed up at Ben’s studio and flat picked and chopped the repertory with ease. Benjamin Barnes holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has been playing Olde Tyme fiddle tunes since the age of 9. Barnes’ has credits on albums by and has toured with artists including Les Claypool, Jason Newsted (Metallica), Erik McFadden, the Rilke String Quartet, Deadweight, Fishbone, the Coup, and Dead Prez. His recordings are available on his website complimentary! No Charge for great original and classic music. Ben plays on a Bohemian instrument made in 1804.
